THE GATEHOUSE & THOTT SUITE

ELSA YOUNG

THE GATEHOUSE

The Gatehouse is a mid-18th century self-catering addition at the gated entrance to the estate, juxtaposing the property’s 17th century bones with integrity. Two ensuite bedrooms rest over two floors, with a mezzanine level offering some additional reclining space on the third. Eclectic living, dining and entertaining rooms merge with one another, letting the property’s extroverted character sing with colour. With an affinity for travel and a discernment in design, the revered interior design and tourism aficionado owners have listened to the way in which each attribute to the property wished to be built. The Gate House, in particular, is an avant-garde residence that’s been intricately stitched together by Swedish designers and craftsmen, South and West African artisanal furnishings, and a collection of art denoting a poignant gallery space. Wall art by Håkan Berg, vinyl floors by Bolon, lighting by Niclas Hoflin of Rubn. Everything is evocative, in an ardent manner.

A series of buildings scatter themselves around the castle. From an art gallery to a greenhouse, a kitchen and dining hall, to an artisanal design space and a hay barn. All in their own way, contributing to the inspirational narrative that’s being told. Burgeoning herb and vegetable gardens are not just blooming for the fine food that’s served, but for the estate’s educational programmes that are a prominent part of the Kaseholm experience. Ever yearning, ever learning new things. Scandinavian chickens and African guinea fowl will be sauntering alongside your stride, as you explore the beautiful gardens. Ducks, geese, goats and Gotland sheep are also roaming the land. An emerald green ridge – in the warmer months, crisp white in the other months – maps a magical walk through what appears to be an enchanting tunnel, towards the ancient, slightly dilapidated ice house. History engulfs the estate from the stone rubble walls to the oldest Chestnut tree in the country, planted by the Swedish King of 1632.

The bones of the The Gatehouse were built by Swedish companies with a focus on carbon neutral products. The owners are conscious about lessening the carbon footprint and making more sustainable choices. You’ll love the recycled vinyl floors as much as we do. In their colours and unique texture.

WHAT WE LOVE

  • The paradigm of a Swedish country villa, decked-out in Scandinavian attire, embellished by African design.

  • Leaving the world behind you as you drive through the entrance gates to the property and meander your way down the lane of the estate, taking in the scenery in all of its splendour.

  • There are an abundance of creative ventures on display around the property – too many to mention here. You just need to take your time, to take it all in, and let inspiration lead the way.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • The property is settled inside of Osterlen, in Southern Sweden. An hour and 15 minutes from Copenhagen.

  • The property includes a Northern Exposure Design Center, where they showcase antiques, art and design from Sweden and other destinations where the owners have travelled to.

  • It’s apparent that this is one of those dreamy destinations that encompasses all that you’ll desire for the makings of an extraordinary Swedish getaway.

THE THOTT SUITE

The Thott Suite Apartment is perfect for those travelling as a couple or as a small clan, eager to experience an eccentric take on Nordic history. As you enter the castle’s slightly more contemporary apartment doors, you’ll pass through the cobbled courtyard with its thriving vegetable garden, ensconced in 17th century history. You’ll likely be greeted by the occasional resident hound, waving their emphatic tail in honour of your arrival. Having been ardently restored back to life, after many decades of neglect, the apartment reveals its eclectic character through its exposed, thick stone walls, its original connecting archway and timber beams. All dressed up in Scandinavian attire, white marble countertops, antique furnishings, woven wall hangings, Japanese textiles and a rattan headboard. A signature stamp from the revered interior design and tourism aficionado owners, that have candidly retained the heritage of the estate, with patchworks of self-expression, risk and humour. Being fully self-catering, the kitchen, living and dining spaces are all well-appointed, equipped and modernly laid out.

As with all of the other buildings on the property – an art gallery, a greenhouse, an artisanal design space and a hay barn – The Thott Suite Apartment, though housed in the original castle – located on the ground floor at the rear side of the courtyard – makes way for the land it occupies. Escorting you out into the gardens where Scandinavian chickens and African guinea fowl cluck and coo with the resident ducks and geese. You’ll come across some goats and Gotland sheep too, grazing the green pastures. It’s up to you whether you would like to explore the surrounding villages, tap into the attractions of the area or walk around the expanse of the estate’s wondrous walkways. Whatever the weather, your days will be ensconced in the hedonism of this hideaway that so wilfully whisks you away with its imaginative composition. A dreamy, illuminating narrative on what a retreat can be. Imploring you to bring it all to life, in your own motion picture, as you reside within the ancient walls of a Nordic castle.

WHAT WE LOVE

  • Though the suite is encased in the original homestead of the property, there is a definitive avant-garde feel of sophistication with a clear distinction in the design. It’s cosy yet invigorating.

  • The use of its original features that make statements and add all of the romance. Repurposed materials, exposing the stone walls and layering the different textures.

  • There are an abundance of creative ventures on display around the property – too many to mention here. You just need to take your time, to take it all in, and let inspiration lead the way.
